the League of American
Theatres and Producers
As the national trade association
for the commercial theatre industry, the League of American
Theatres and Producers, Inc. operates under the Live Broadway
trademark.
The League’s
members are theatre owners and operators, producers, presenters
and general managers of Broadway and touring legitimate theatrical
productions. Each year, the League and its members bring Broadway
to nearly 25 million people in New York and more than 140 cities
across the US and Canada.
Formed in 1930 as The League of New York Theatres, the
organization’s overall goals are to foster increased awareness of
and interest in Broadway theatre and support the creation of more
profitable theatrical productions. On behalf of its members, the
League negotiates collective bargaining agreements with all
theatrical unions and guilds; coordinates industry-wide marketing
initiatives and corporate sponsorships; oversees government
relations for the Broadway industry; maintains relevant research
archives and databases; and supports charitable efforts for the
benefit of the entire theatrical community.

The Tony Awards®
The American Theatre Wing's Tony
Awards® are presented by Tony Award Productions, a joint venture
of The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. and the
American Theatre Wing. The two organizations have jointly
administered the Tonys since 1967, the year of the first Tony
telecast. Responsibility for the governance and administration of
the awards is vested in two committees:
The Tony Awards Management Committee is made up of representatives
of the League and the Wing. It oversees the Tony Awards, with
emphasis on the television broadcast.
The Tony Awards Administration Committee is comprised of 24
members, of whom 10 are designated by the Wing, 10 by the League,
and one each by the Dramatists Guild, Actors' Equity Association,
United Scenic Artists, and the Society of Stage Directors and
Choreographers. This committee determines eligibility for
nominations in all awards categories, reviews the rules governing
the awards, and appoints the Nominating Committee. It may, at its
discretion, bestow non-competitive Tony Awards in three
categories: Special Tony Awards, the Regional Theatre Tony Award,
and Best Recreation of a Leading Role by an Actor/Actress; as well
as Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre.

Commercial
Theater Institute
A
joint project of the League and Theatre Development Fund, the
Commercial Theater Institute
is dedicated to the training of novice producers. There are two
main CTI programs: An intensive, three-day program held each
spring that is open to the general public; and a more extensive
14-week seminar that lasts from February to May, and is open to a
small group of theatre professionals who are selected via an
application process.
The
Commercial Theater Institute is a project of the Theatre
Development Fund and the League of American Theatres and
Producers, Inc. Dedicated to training the next generation of
commercial theatre producers, CTI provides resources and guidance
to individuals interested in the various paths one can take
towards creating commercial productions for the stage. CTI was
administered by Frederic B. Vogel from its inception until his
death in 2005.
